Review: Twenties Girl by Sophie Kinsella

Sophie Kinsella’s Twenties Girl is a bit special book for me as it was my first read. And I guess also for Sophie as it is her only book that features ghost! This novel has a touch of sensitivity as it wonderfully describes the importance of our relations with our older family members. It explains how we sometimes intentionally or unintentionally neglect the importance of our relationships.

Twenties Girl is a story of 27 years old Lara and her 105 years old Great Aunt Sadie. Lara’s life is falling apart, her boyfriend broke up with her, her best friend and business partner Natalie flee to Goa and left her with a Business she doesn’t know how to run. The story begins with Lara going to attend Sadie’s funeral whom she hadn’t seen since she was premature. Sadie seems to live in a nursing home for a long time after the stroke in her heart. At the funeral Lara starts hearing voices and seeing the ghost of a beautiful 23 years old girl who claims that she is her great aunt Sadie.  Her ghost cannot find peace because she had lost her necklace which she needs before her cremation in order to rest in tranquility. And she chooses Lara to hunt for her gorgeous necklace. Of course Lara believed that she is going crazy. But from that point on Kinsella takes you on a roller-coaster ride of emotions; you go from annoyed to pleased, from melancholic to cheerful, from teary to laughing out loud.

Though I really enjoyed the book but there were some pros and cons of both the main characters Lara was 27 years old but she doesn’t seem to be mature everything in her life was going sad but then I believed that in everyone’s life there is a point comes when everything starts falling apart no matter what age you are in you feel broken. Coming to Sadie, she was my favorite character in the book because she appears to be ravishing wearing short dresses fully detailed with pearls, pleats and beads. She was full of herself, vibrant and honest and cons of her character was that she was annoying and stubborn.

Lara’s family has also fun filled characters another important character is her Uncle Bill the billionaire entrepreneur who started a Café like Starbucks with two coins.

As Sadie’s and Lara’s relation grew the story becomes more and more interesting, they both search for the necklace that sounds splendid as it was described “A necklace with rhinestones, strings of yellow beads and, dangling from it all, a dragonfly pendant.” It was given to Sadie by her parents on her 21st birthday. Sadie becomes Lara’s new shadow, helped her to put her life back on track. She made Lara to do such things that she wouldn’t have done without her. The understanding that grew between the two was just so heart-warming. She also insisted Lara to date Ed whom she finds handsome and extremely charming so that she herself can have one last toss.
Well that’s not all this novel is full of adventurous hunting events and the beautiful reason behind the importance of necklace to Sadie.

After reading this book I was so pleased by Kinsella’s delivery of words the way she puts them making them so natural that throughout the novel I acted out Lara’s part hallucinating that Sadie is there. I have done it with complete expressions I swear!
I loved how the novel ends leaving me in tears, well that happens most of the time. I find myself very sensitive when I read or watch movies and I weep every time even if it’s a happy ending or sad. Hehe.
